How to take FCLO... Did Grandma know best?

October 25, 2012

From old movies we can still pick up the essence of what it was like when the cod liver oil jar came out of the cupboard.  Kids would scatter.  We still have one of our 6 children that seems to go missing each morning.

Stories from the war years indicate that schools would ensure the children were well nourished by providing cod liver oil each day.  This was often blended with orange juice to make it easier to take.

We did a quick taste testing experiment in our office and below is what we think are good product blending options  to make it easier to take your FCLO each day.  Here are our favorites.

We selected a FCLO lot that had a stronger essence to ensure we were giving the samples a challenge.

Pomegranate juice seems to be the favorite.

1/2 tsp FCLO 1 TBSP pomegranate juice

1/2 tsp FCLO 1 TBSP tomato or blended juice

1/2 tsp FCLO 1 TBSP yogurt

1/2 tsp FCLO 1/2 tsp Maple Syrup

Our least favorite was the FCLO mixed with Orange juice.

my 2.5 year old son and husband blend theirs with OJ or in a raw milk smoothie... I take mine off the spoon and chase it with fresh fruit, pear, strawberry, grapes, whatever is in the house. or vhase it with my raw milk smoothie.

I use the syringe thingie and shoot the oil into the back of my mouth, just like if I was medicating a cat ^_^. Works great, quick and easy.

careful... one can shoot too far and swallow wrong. there is a reason for ones mouth

I tried to do that and it just burned the back of my throat. When I have to do mega doses of FCLO to control the menorrghia I get a couple of times a year, I'll use the liquorice flavored oil and mix the two tablespoons with mango tango juice from Naked. I don't normally buy that juice, but it is thick enough to cover the taste and it goes down great so I'll buy it just for taking the FCLO with. It works for the kids, too. But obviously they don't need as much. :)

I make a raw milk yogurt smoothie every morning that I add FCLO to. My boyfriend and I can't even taste it in it.

rather than blending the oil try taking the oil with a OJ chaser. Like this: pour oil into spoon, take a breath and hold it, put spoon of oil into mouth, don't swallow, drink oj.

the maple syrup idea sounds good for our 7yo though. :)

Interesting, I can see why the orange juice would be too acidic on the palate and could even enhance the CLO taste. Going with a bitter or sweet will tone down the 'fishy' taste and also the aroma. I do use OJ with the SLO in orange flavour-they seem to go together. For the CLO we use a pure not from concentrate cranberry juice which is strong enough to overpower the CLO taste.
Never thought of Maple Syrup! Could anything taste bad with maple syrup...probably not.
Love your products!

I take my high vitamin butter oil off the spoon, let it disolve in my mouth then I take unflavored liquid (not capsules) right off the spoon and wash it down with a big glass of raw milk kefir. Follow that with a raw egg yolk in a glass of raw milk.

How about prune juice? Sounds weird, but it's worked well for us. Dried plums make a great chaser as well.

But our favorite by far is the cinnamon flavor stirred into applesauce. Even my toddler eats every drop!
