Fermented Cod Liver OilMashed Potatoes

A time-honored twist on a classic comfort dish

When it comes to comfort foods, mashed potatoes hold a special place at the table.  Especially when they’re made with real, nourishing ingredients. Our version combines the familiar flavor and texture with all love Fermented Cod Liver Oil (FCLO) has to offer, a food cherished for its seasonal support and balance of fat-soluble vitamins.

Why These Ingredients Matter

This recipe isn’t just about flavor, it's about nourishment.

  • Grass-fed butter and raw cream: These provide naturally balanced fats that carry essential vitamins A, D, and K2, key nutrients often emphasized in traditional diets around the world.

  • Cultured sour cream or crème fraîche: Adds probiotics and enzymes that help with digestion and lend a tangy depth.

  • Unrefined salt: Supplies trace minerals that support balance and hydration.  Be sure to do your research when sourcing quality salt.  You can find Celtic Sea Salt in our shop.

  • Unpeeled red potatoes: Including the skin retains minerals and natural fiber.  Organic red potatoes are going to have the highest nutrient content of all of the potatoes found in a typical supermarket.

  • Fermented Cod Liver Oil: A traditional source of omega fatty acids and fat soluble vitamins best enjoyed unheated to preserve its full nutritional profile.

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs organic red potatoes, unpeeled (to keep nutrients in tact)
  • 4 Tbsp grass-fed raw butter (or ghee)
  • ½ cup raw milk or raw cream (warm, not cold)
  • 4 Tbsp cultured sour cream or crème fraîche (optional, for tang and probiotic content)
  • 1 tsp mineral salt, plus more to taste
  • Freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 1–2 tsp Green Pasture Unflavored Liquid Fermented Cod Liver Oil (added only after mashing and cooling slightly)

Optional but highly recommended flavor boosters:

  • 1 roasted garlic clove or organic garlic powder (for masking and depth)

1 tsp chopped fresh chives or parsley for garnish

Instructions

Red potatoes boiling in a pot on the stove.

1. Boil the potatoes:
Cut potatoes into quarters (unless using miniature potatoes) and place them in a pot with filtered water and a pinch of salt. Bring to a boil and simmer for 15–20 minutes, until tender when pierced.

2. Mash:
Drain the potatoes well and let them steam off for a minute. Mash with hand masher or mix with mixer until mostly smooth, leaving a few small chunks if you prefer a rustic texture.

4. Cool slightly before adding Fermented Cod Liver Oil:
Let the mashed potatoes rest for 2–3 minutes until just warm, not hot. Then stir in the Fermented Cod Liver Oil thoroughly. This step preserves its valuable nutrients

Serve immediately, topped with a pat of butter and sprinkle of optional herbs.

Tweaks for Your Perfect Texture

  • For ultra-creamy potatoes: Use raw cream instead of milk and blend briefly with a hand mixer for a smoother finish.
  • For lighter potatoes: Swap some butter for ghee and mash by hand to keep a fluffy texture.
  • For tang and probiotic benefits: Include the cultured sour cream or crème fraîche to balance the richness with brightness.

The Most Nourishing Gravy Pairings for Cod Liver Oil Mashed Potatoes

To take these mashed potatoes to the next level, pair them with a rich flavorful gravy made from your roast drippings:

Turkey Gravy
After roasting your bird, deglaze the pan with bone broth instead of water. Simmer the drippings with a splash of raw cream or butter for added fat soluble nourishment, and thicken with a bit of arrowroot powder for a smooth texture.

Beef Gravy
Use slow-simmered beef stock or broth from marrow bones. Reduce the liquid with pan drippings until rich and glossy, finishing with grass-fed butter or ghee for a flavor that complements the earthy potatoes.

Both options honor traditional preparation using whole, slow-cooked foods that extract minerals, collagen, and nutrients naturally
